First thing's first, you have to decide on your cookie and treat varieties. I like to do at least 6 types - but don't stress - a few of the options can be no-bake or even store-bought candies. You want to have some little treats for filling in the cracks to make it look full, abundant, and enticing!

To me, these hit all of my must-have Christmas cookie tastes and textures. But that's the great and FUN thing about making a Christmas cookie box; You have full creative authority! Choose your favorite cookies and treats - the special recipes that you wait all year to make - and have fun with it. I'll link a few more recipes at the bottom of this post that I think would be great additions.

Different sizes, textures, and flavors

When it comes to a Christmas Cookie Box, I like to add something classic, spiced, fruity, chocolatey - a variety of flavors. This box has something for everyone. I chose to fill the chocolate cookies with a super simple American buttercream that I spiked with peppermint extract and then rolled in crushed candy canes for an extra-special and festive touch.

One of my favorite things to do is use the same cookie recipe but make two different sizes just for some visual interest. You can see this with the peanut butter oatmeal cookies. It's super simple to make two sizes of almost any cookie dough. Just decrease the baking time by a few minutes.

I like to include some candy-like treats in a Christmas cookie box, like the peppermint bark and meringues. These are perfect for filling in cracks and just making everything pop. Not to mention they are super simple and perfect make-aheads (or feel free to use store-bought! You will get NO judgment from me!)

Bringing it all together

Finally, arrange the cookies in a large box - you don't need anything fancy. This was a box used to wrap a sweater in I think! Just put down some pretty tissue paper and a little wax or parchment paper. Then I like to alternate some cookies on their sides and some in stacks. I just love the way it looks to see the sides and the tops - especially those crackled molasses cookies. They just SCREAM Christmas to me and remind me so much of my grandma.

And last, but definitely not least, add a festive touch by using a few small ornaments and some ribbon or twine. Even if you are just making this for yourself for a Holiday at home, make it special - you deserve it. After all, this little touch is what makes it a Christmas Cookie Box!

And I can't post about a cookie box without sharing these two cookie queens! My friend Sam at Frosting and Fettuccine and my friend Becky at Displaced Housewife both have created such beautiful cookie boxes and I've linked to them below. They really show how no two cookie boxes are alike. Check out their blogs and their amazing cookie recipes too!

How do you package homemade christmas cookies?

To package cookies for shipping, you want to place each individual variety in a stack and wrap them tightly with plastic wrap. If they are sticky, place small pieces of parchment between each one.

Make sure to place anything with a strong flavor like peppermint or peanut butter in a double layer and then inside a plastic bag to prevent the entire cookie box from taking on those flavors.

Use plenty of tissue paper and shredded paper to fill in all the cracks and prevent the cookies from moving around during shipping.

How to make a cookie box

To make a cookie box, choose a gift box (such as a garment box) or a box made specifically for cookies with small compartments for each variety. Decide on your cookie varieties, bake them, and allow to cool completely. Place tissue paper in each compartment and nestle the cookies in in a pretty pattern. Place the top on and give to a lucky recipient!

What do you put in the bottom of a cookie box?

Place parchment or wax paper in the bottom of cookie box followed by seasonal tissue paper.

How do you separate cookies in a cookie box?

If you are not shipping the cookies, you can separate them with parchment liners, cupcake liners, or cardboard and/or craft wood that you cut yourself. If shipping be sure to wrap the cookies in plastic and use plenty of tissue paper and/or shredded paper to prevent them from moving during shipment.

This White Chocolate Peppermint Bark is the easiest but most festive treat. I have been making this for YEARS - ever since my kids were teeny tiny. Only 2 ingredients, but my secret method is what makes it extra special

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12-16 servings

Ingredients

  • 24 ounces white chocolate chips *see notes
  • 12 peppermint candy canes

Instructions

  1. Place a long strip of parchment or wax paper on your counter top.
  2. peel and place candy canes in a large zip-top bag. Using a rolling pin or meat mallet (the flat side!) smash candy canes into bits. You want some larger pieces and some dusty bits.
  3. Now, using a fine mesh strainer, separate the large candy cane bits from the dust (my kids and I used to call it fairy dust). Save the dust in a separate bowl and just leave the larger bits in the strainer as you prepare the chocolate.
  4. Place chocolate chips in a large glass bowl and microwave in 30 second blasts, stirring each time, until all chips are melted. should take about 2 minutes total.
  5. Now, working pretty quickly, stir in your fairy dust while the chocolate is still hot and very runny.
  6. Quickly pour mixture out onto the paper and spread to a thin, mostly even layer.
  7. Quickly sprinkle top with larger chunks of candy cane, pressing down slightly so they really stick.
  8. Allow to cool completely and break or cut into any shapes/sizes you want!

Notes

Just to make our lives complicated, Nestle chips come in 12 ounce bags and Ghirardelli chips come in 11 ounce bags. Just use two bags of either variety - you don't need to get too fussy about those few ounces.

One year I couldn't find candy canes and I used those little red and white star mints with great results.

How do you cut it to get pretty squares and not odd cracked pieces?

I use a sharp, thin chef's knife and I do still get plenty of cracked pieces but they go into the cookie boxes or gift bags as well (nobody seems to mind). I very often just crack the bark into large pieces by hand as I love the way it looks and that's how my kids always helped me make it. I made the pretty squares mainly for the photos, I must admit. But it is pretty easy to slice when it is fully hardened at room temperature - not fridge cold.

Hello! Do you need to temper the chocolate? Is it gonna become soft if not stored in the fridge afterwards?
        Thanks!

Hello! Nope, no tempering - just as the recipe is written. It really is that simple! I never keep it in the refrigerator. I break it up and keep it in a cookie jar all Christmas season! or as long as it takes my kids to eat it all and then I make another batch 😉 Let me know if you have any other questions!
