Large rectangular box filled with 7 Christmas cookie varieties

Recipe Background and Details

So if you have been here for a bit, you may know my original Christmas Cookie Box that I shared in 2020. It is impossible to beat, but this year I decided I would try to create a new Christmas cookie box version and I hope to continue the tradition and share a new one each holiday season.

Ingredients

Here are the cookie recipes I used to create my 2023 Christmas Cookie Box:

pile of cookies on wire rack over vintage baking tray
gingerbread caramel thumbprint cookies some with holiday sprinkles and some without
stack of graham cracker toffee tied with twine
blondies on parchment paper drizzled with butterscotch
  • Eggnog Snickerdoodle Thumbprint Cookies
  • Gingerbread Caramel Thumbprint Cookies
  • Classic No-Bake Cookies
  • Sweet & Salty Graham Cracker Toffee
  • Brown Butter Blondies: minus the caramelized white chocolate, chilled, cut into Christmas tree shapes, drizzled with melted white chocolate and topped with Christmas sprinkles
  • Grammy's Chocolate Cookies: I used tiny cookie cutters to cut out shapes after baking and cooling and then filled a few with melted white chocolate and topped with sparkling sugar.
  • Sugar Cookies with Christmas Sprinkles - a recipe I'm working on but here is a similar recipe

Instructions on how I created my 2023 Christmas Cookie Box

One of the most overwhelming parts of creating a cookie box is coordinating all the recipes. Most people, including me, do not want to make 7 cookie recipes all in one day. That is why I like to choose recipes that either freeze well after baking, the dough can be made ahead, or the cookie/treat itself has a long shelf-life.

To make my 2023 Christmas Cookie Box, I made several cookie recipes ahead of time and froze them. The cookies I made ahead and froze were the gingerbread caramel thumbprints and the eggnog thumbprints.

I made the sugar cookie and chocolate cookie dough and stored them in tightly sealed containers in the refrigerator and scooped and baked them cold.

I made the brown butter blondies 3 days ahead and stored tightly wrapped in plastic in the refrigerator. When I was ready to assemble the box, I cut the tree shapes and added the toppings. The white chocolate hardens almost instantly on the cold blondie.

The no bake cookies and graham cracker toffee recipes are great make aheads because they store really well at room temperature for a week or even more. I made these two recipes a few days before I assembled this cookie box and stored them at room temperature in airtight cookie tins.

Equipment

For this cookie box I used a Ball Mason Jar box. I trimmed down the cardboard insert so that it fit flush with the top of the box. Once I assembled this box I wrapped it all over in a thick layer of plastic wrap and surprised one of my best friends with it!

Top tips

Spread out the cookie and treat making, and use your freezer and refrigerator. See Instructions above and in the recipe card for a make ahead strategy.

If you will be storing this for a day or two or shipping it, be sure to wrap any stronger flavored cookies separately so their flavors don't take over the cookie box. Peppermint, citrus, and peanut butter are all flavors that I have found will really take over. See FAQ's for shipping info.

Christmas Cookie Box FAQ's

How do you pack Christmas cookies?

To package cookies for shipping, you want to place each individual variety in a stack and wrap them tightly with plastic wrap. If they are sticky, place small pieces of parchment between each one.
Make sure to place anything with a strong flavor like peppermint or peanut butter in a double layer and then inside a plastic bag to prevent the entire cookie box from taking on those flavors. Use plenty of tissue paper and shredded paper to fill in all the cracks and prevent the cookies from moving around during shipping.
